Israels land promises

Abraham's Promises to Israel fulfilled

God called Abram out of his father's country, Haran, to go into Canaan. So Abram left all his family, his comforts, his friends, business associates, etc., and went into Canaan. Because he did as God asked, God made him a promise:

(Gen 12:2) And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: God promises to make Abram's offspring into a nation of many people. Later we will see that God will compare these people to the sands on the seashore and the stars in the heavens.

  1. We know that Abraham had a son who he named Issiac and that Issiac married Rebecca.

  2. We also know that Rebecca had Jacob and Esau and that God hated Esau and loved Jacob

  3. Jacob's name we know was changed to Isreal and that is where the Isrealites originated from.

  4.  Jacob who's name was now Israel had by his wives ,Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zubulan, Dan, Naphtali, Gad , Asher, Joseph and Benjamin. All of these men were made the head's of Israel, otherwise known as the 12 tribes, except for Joseph and Benjamin, who died in Egypt, and Levi, because the Levites were priest and their inheritance was God. Joseph's Sons Ephraim and Manesseh made up the other two tribes.

  1. This meant the twleve tribes of Isreal were-

    A. Eastern Judah, Issachar and Zepulun

    B. Southern Rebun, Simeon and Gad

    C. Western Benjamin, Manesseh and Ephraim

    D. Northern Dan, Asher and Naphtali

    1. (Gen 12:7) And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. He gave Abrams seed first the physical land of canaan and then he gave it to them spiritually. The key to understanding this is to read the scripture first comes the natural and then the spiritual. This happened both naturally and spiritually. First it happened literally when Joshua (who represented Jesus) led them into the Promised Land. Abram built an altar and worshipped Yehovah. In fact, he did so wherever he stopped.

Abram and Lot separated, Lot going into the plain of Jordan and Abram staying in the high country in Canaan. After their separation, God again spoke to Abram.

(Gen 13:14-16) And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward: {15} For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever. {16} And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

    1. People believe that God promised Abraham that he would get the physical land of Cannan forever, because of this people continue to believe that the Jews in Israel will someday have all of that land again and that it will never be taken from them.

    2. They never considered that Gods promise to Abraham was a spiritual land promise that was not for the natural Jews to inhabit, but Gods new Isreal (believeing Jew and Gentiles church) that replaced the old Jews, who rejected their messiah by crucifing him and rejecting his new covenant.

    3. Read Heb.11, 12, and 13, but for now read Hebrews 11:8-18

8By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.

9By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

10For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

11Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.

12Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

13These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

14For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country.

15And truly, if they had been mindful of that country from whence they came out, they might have had opportunity to have returned.

16But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

17By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

18Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called:

    1. Notice in verse 15 what I put in bold. This scripture makes it clear that they were not going to return to a natural land.

    2. Verse 15 is what I want to concentrate on now. This proves that the land promise became a spiritual promise of a heavenly land. That is the country they were looking forward to inheriting. Notice in verse 15 he said for he hath prepared for them a city. Lets look at some scriptures-

      A. “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”- Matthew 5:14

B.  Rev 21-Now I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea. 2 Then I, John,[a] saw the holy city, New Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is within men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God. 4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

When you read A it is saying that ye (you) the people (church) are the light of the world and a city set on a hill. Let me break down just this part first. The church is the city. What city is that? The new Jerusalem. Why is it on a hill? It is because the church had come to Mt Zion.

Lets take a look at B now. What is the new heaven and the new earth? Also, who is the old heaven and earth?

I will start with the old heaven and earth-

Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth!
For the Lord has spoken:
“I have nourished and brought up children,
And they have rebelled against Me;-Isaiah 1:2

Here you have the old Israel being addressed as heaven and earth. In the old testament heaven and earth represented three things, 1 Gods old covenant people. 2 Jerusalem (their land) 3 The law. Once you understand that you will understand that the new heaven and earth represented 1 Gods new covenant people saved Jew and Gentile in one body. 2 The new Jerusalem city (spiritual land and church) 3 The new covenant of grace. The next part says and there was no more sea . The sea in the bible often represented people what he was saying here is there would be no more people in the old Jerusalem, because it was about ready to be destroyed. Now read B where it says the new Jerusalem is coming down as a bride adorned for her husband. We know the bride of Christ is the church saved Jew and Gentile in one body. We know God wasn't going to marry a building. This obviously means the new Jerusalem was a symbolic picture of the church and Jesus was getting ready to marry his new covenant bride. Now lets address B verse 3 which said- “And I heard a loud voice from heaven saying, “Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people. God Himself will be with them and be their God.” When you are filled with Gods holy spirit he comes and makes his tabernacle within you. So here God is saying he doesn't need a physical tabernacle, because he now dwells within his people. B verse 4 is probably one of the verses that is the most misunderstood. It states- “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.” Here the tears, crying , pain, are all terms that are referring to what it feels like to be seperated from God which is what happened during the fall in the garden of Eden. The death was not talking about doing away with physical death, but spiritual death. In the garden of Eden God told Adam and Eve that in the day they ate of the forbidden tree they would die. They did not die physically, but they did die spiritually. I'm skipping ahead a bit, but in verse 3 of 22 in Rev it says that there was no more curse. The reason there was no more curse was because Jesus died on a tree to undo the curse that Adam and Eve caused when they ate from the forbidden tree.

C Rev 21:9 -“Come, I will show you the bride, the Lamb’s wife.” 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, 11 having the glory of God. Her light was like a most precious stone,

Here the angel is showing John the bride, the lambs wife and once again it is the great city the holy Jerusalem proving once more that Jesus was marrying the new Jerusalem. Makes sense now that we know that the new Jerusalem is the church the bride of Christ. More proof is that in verse 11 the new Jerusalem is referenced as her, which makes the new Jerusalem female. D Rev 21:11- 14 Now the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them were the names[i] of the twelve apostles of the Lamb”

The city had 12 foundations, because the church is built on the gospel message of the 12 disciples.

Rev 21:15-21 These scriptures are showing John measuring the city. In the bible you can see the significance of numbers to him. I believe he's showing the perfection of the city (his bride). Also, you can see from the discription that it's symbolic. For example, I don't think that there is any gold in the world that is transparent. I believe he said that, because when you get gold really hot by melting it that is the only way to cause the gold to be transparent, but once it dries it returns to its normal color. I believe it was just symbolic of his saints being tried by fire to be made pure gold. Also,I find it hard to believe that Jesus was speaking of a literal gate made out of one pearl. That makes me believe that it was symbolic as well.

22 I did not see a temple in the city, because the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. 24 The nations will walk by its light, and the kings of the earth will bring their splendor into it. 25 On no day will its gates ever be shut, for there will be no night there. 26 The glory and honor of the nations will be brought into it. 27 Nothing impure will ever enter it, nor will anyone who does what is shameful or deceitful, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life.

A The reason I believe there is no more temple is because-

1 Jesus's one time sacrifice wiped away all our sins and there is no need to have a temple where you sacrifice animals blood, which the bible says could never wash away sins.

2 Jesus would not have allowed the old temple to be destroyed if he wanted animal sacrifices to continue.

3 We know from the bible that when we are filled with Gods spirit he comes and makes his temple/ tabernacle within us Rev 21:3. That means that the church is the new Jerusalem, because Jesus said “In my fathers house are many mansions ( Greek word abodes) if it were not so I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you that where I am you may be also.” When we are filled with his spirit he makes his abode within us and since Jesus is the tree of life in the new Jerusalem that makes the new Jerusalem within us. He basically restored us back to Eden. Eden was the first physcial the new Jerusalem was the 2nd spiritual.

B Read verse 23 Jesus is the light of the city.Jesus dwells within us and he said that we are the light of the world.

1 The nations I bleieve are all the different people across the world who are saved and part of the new Jerusalem. Jesus says we are kings and priests in the earth. I don't believe this is talking about literal kings on earth.

C The gates are open-

    2. The gates are open in hopes that sinners will come in and eat from the tree of life(Christ) and drink from the waters that flow from either side(get saved), and never thirst again. Just like the woman at the well Jesus said if she drank his water she would never thirst again. Once again speaking symbolically. Another scripture proving Gods saints are the new Jerusalem is Jesus said out of thy bellys shall flow rivers of living water. Why living? Because, we are now spiritually alive from being spiritually dead. Just like the scripture where Jesus told the people let the (spiritually) dead bury the (physically) dead.

D Only the names written in the lambs book of life-

    3. Have you ever wondered why its called the lambs book of life?

It is because only those who have been saved and are no longer spiritually dead, but spiritually alive are the ones written in the lambs book of life. Eden restored Rev 22-

  1. 1 Then the angel showed me the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2 down the middle of the great street of the city. On each side of the river stood the tree of life, bearing twelve crops of fruit, yielding its fruit every month(I already explained that when you're saved you are eating from the tree of life and the waters are symbolic of the holy spirit where you can drink and never be thirsty).

  2. The golden leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations( If the new Jerusalem is heaven then there would be no need for healing, but on earth Gods people need healing from time to time.)

  3. No longer will there be any curse(This is because Jesus broke the curse by becoming a curse for us.) The throne of God and of the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants will serve him.

  4. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads(this is obviously symbolic or not visible with the naked eye).

  5. There will be no more night. They will not need the light of a lamp or the light of the sun, for*g the Lord God will give them light. And they will reign for ever and ever(Jesus said in his word, that we the church are a city set on a hill, and we are the light of the world.

  6. The Bible says that when you are baptized, that we are resurrected into Christ. This happened spiritually when Jesus who was the seed came and died. Now those who believed Christ and were baptized with his blood were filled with his Spirit became the firstfruits of God, and became part of the new Jerusalem church and enter the spiritual promise land. Read the scriptures below for more proof- Galatians 3 says-

  7. 16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “And to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “And to your Seed,”[i] who is Christ. 28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Scriptures proving God fulfuilled not only his promises in the natural, but in the spiritual as well.

    1. God said that if Israel got all the land promised, then they would have six cities of refuge.

    A. Joshua 20:7-9 lists six cities of refuge - Kadesh, Shechem, Hebron, Bezer, Ramoth, and Golan.

B. "Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one word of all the good words which the Lord your God spoke concerning you has failed; all have been fulfilled for you, not one of them has failed. "It shall come about that just as all the good words which the Lord your God spoke to you have come upon you, so the Lord will bring upon you all the threats, until He has destroyed you from off this good land which the Lord your God has given you.

      1. " (Joshua 23:14-15) osh 24:28 Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to his inheritance.

D. "So the Lord gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they possessed it and lived in it. And the Lord gave them rest on every side, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers, and no one of all their enemies stood before them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hand. Not one of the good promises which the Lord had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass. " (Joshua 21:43-45)

E. Jer 11:5 "in order to confirm the oath which I swore to your forefathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day." Then I answered and said, "Amen, O LORD."

F. Neh 9:8 And Thou didst find Abraham's heart faithful before Thee, and didst make a covenant with him to give him the land of the Canaanite, of the Hittite and the Amorite, of the Perizzite, the Jebusite, and the Girgashite-- to give it to his descendants. And Thou hast fulfilled Thy promise, for Thou art righteous.

All promises God made to Abraham were fulfilled over 2000 years ago. Israel became a great nation in Egypt, possessed the land under Joshua and Solomon and through Jesus all the nations of the earth were blessed.

1. 2 Sam 8:3 David defeated Hadadezer...as he went to restore his rule at the River [Euphrates].

  1. 1 Kings 4:21 Now Solomon ruled over all the kingdoms from the [Euphrates] River to the land of the Philistines and to the border of Egypt; they brought tribute and served Solomon.

  2. 2 Chr 9:26 And he was the ruler over all the kings from the Euphrates River even to the land of the Philistines, and as far as the border of Egypt.

  3. Gen 46:3 And He said, "I am God, the God of your father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there.

  4. Heb11:11-12 even Sarah received ability to conceive...since she considered Him faithful who had promised; therefore, also, there was born of one man, and him as good as dead at that, as many descendants as the stars of heaven in number, and innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

  5. Deut 1:10 'The LORD your God has multiplied you, and behold, you are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude.

  6. Deut 10:22 "Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons in all, and now the Lord has made you as numerous as the stars of heaven.

Spiritual promises fulfilled as well

  1. Gal 4:28 And you brethren, like Isaac, are children of promise

  2. Gal 3:29 if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's offspring, heirs according to promise

  3. Rom 4:16-17 For this reason it is by faith, that it might be in accordance with grace, in order that the promise may be certain to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, as it is written, "A father of many nations have I made you")

Natural promises fulfilled

  1. Josh 21:43-45 So the LORD gave Israel all the land which He had sworn to give to their fathers, and they possessed it and lived in it. And the LORD gave them rest on every side, according to all that He had sworn to their fathers, and no one of all their enemies stood before them; the LORD gave all their enemies into their hand. Not one of the good promises which the LORD had made to the house of Israel failed; all came to pass.

  2. Ps 105:42-44 For He remembered His holy word with Abraham His servant; And He brought forth His people with joy, His chosen ones with a joyful shout. He gave them also the lands of the nations, that they might take possession of the fruit of the peoples' labor,

  3. Jer 11:5 in order to confirm the oath which I swore to your forefathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day."'" Then I answered and said, "Amen, O LORD."

What most people don't understand is that God not only naturally and spirityally gave the Israelistes their promise land, but he gave them conditions that if they broke his commandments there would be destruction and judgement.

  1. Deut 8:19-20 And it shall come about if you ever forget the LORD your God, and go after other gods and serve them and worship them, I testify against you today that you shall surely perish. Like the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so you shall perish; because you would not listen to the voice of the LORD your God.

  2. Deut 9:5 It is not for your righteousness or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the LORD your God is driving them out before you, in order to confirm the oath which the LORD swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

  3. Deut 6:10,15,18-19 Then it shall come about when the LORD your God brings you into the land which He swore to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give you, great and splendid cities which you did not build...You shall not follow other gods, He will wipe you off the face of the earth... do what is right that you may go in and possess the good land which the LORD swore to {give} your fathers...by driving out all your enemies from before you, as the LORD has spoken.

  4. Josh 23:12-16 For if you ever go back and cling to the rest of these nations, these which remain among you, and intermarry with them, so that you associate with them and they with you, know with certainty that the LORD your God will not continue to drive these nations out from before you; but they shall be a snare and a trap to you, and a whip on your sides and thorns in your eyes, until you perish from off this good land which the LORD your God has given you. Now behold, today I am going the way of all the earth, and you know in all your hearts and in all your souls that not one word of all the good words which the LORD your God spoke concerning you has failed; all have been fulfilled for you, not one of them has failed. And it shall come about that just as all the good words which the LORD your God spoke to you have come upon you, so the LORD will bring upon you all the threats, until He has destroyed you from off this good land which the LORD your God has given you. When you transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which He commanded you, and go and serve other gods, and bow down to them, then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land which He has given you.

God judged Israel several times in the old Testament by stirring up another nations against them for their sins and adultry. Finally, they did the worst thing of all, they killed their messiah. This is what the abomination was that caused the desolation. This time he destroyed his old adulterous bride and divorced her and married a new bride, which was the new Israel. The saved Jew and Gentiles in one body.

What we need to remember is that Jesus fulfilled all of his promises to Abraham. The land he promised to give him was a spiritual land, the nations he promised to give him was all the nations of the earth who in the future would be saved , and the people he promised were promises of the seed (Christ) who was going to be Jews and Gentiles who would get saved under Gods new covenant of grace.
